About the Museum
|
The Falls on the Colorado Museum (FOCM) is a non-profit 501(c)(3) that was formed in 1999 by Madolyn Frasier and Billy Becker in order to preserve and present the history of Marble Falls and the surrounding communities. Operating solely through donations, the FOCM first opened its doors in 2001 in a small building in Johnson Park. After several relocations, the museum moved into its current home, the historic Old Granite School at 2001 Broadway Street, in 2010.
The Museum is funded by the members of the museum, grants, funds from the hotel/motel tax, and through generous donations of visitors. For more information on how you can help, please click on the Support tab. |
The museum is housed in the historic granite school building, which has a designated state historical marker. The school was built in 1891. Originally a men’s university, they began admitting women about three years later. In 1908 it became a public school, and students continued to use the building until the early 1980s.
Marker Inscription: Adam R. Johnson donated land at this site for construction of the present two-story granite building. Completed in 1891, it originally housed the Marble Falls Alliance University. Near Backbone Creek, east of this main building, a wooden boarding house was built for the students. The property was sold later in 1891 at a sheriff's sale, but continued to be leased for use as a tuition school. In 1908 the local voters chose to buy the structure, and it has been used for classes by the Marble Falls School District since that date.
